Project Mu TYPE HC+ Front Brake Pads
For 1983–1987 Toyota Corolla AE86 Trueno / Levin and 1984–1987 U.S.-Market Corolla Sport AE86
Overview
Project Mu TYPE HC+ Front Brake Pads are a high-performance street and circuit brake pad for Toyota AE86 front disc brake applications. The Super Graphite Metallic compound combines strong braking response with a wide operating range, making TYPE HC+ suitable for enthusiast-driven cars that see aggressive street use, canyon driving, autocross, drift, and track days.
With an applicable rotor temperature range of 0–800°C and a 0.43–0.58μ friction coefficient, TYPE HC+ provides substantially more thermal capacity and friction than a conventional street-oriented pad without requiring the elevated minimum operating temperature of a dedicated competition compound.
Compared with Project Mu's more street-focused compounds, TYPE HC+ prioritizes braking performance, heat resistance, and friction response over minimizing brake dust and noise.
Key Features
- 0–800°C rotor temperature range supports cold operation through sustained high-temperature braking
- 0.43–0.58μ friction coefficient for strong braking response
- Super Graphite Metallic friction material
- Designed for aggressive street and circuit use
- Broad operating range suitable for spirited driving, autocross, drift, and track days
- Suitable for radial and S-tire applications
- Front axle disc brake application
- Fits verified 4A-GE and 4A-C AE86 front brake applications
Street-to-Circuit Performance
TYPE HC+ is designed around a particularly broad temperature range. Unlike a race-focused compound that requires substantial brake temperature before reaching its intended operating window, TYPE HC+ begins its applicable range at 0°C while retaining performance capability through 800°C.
That combination makes it well suited to an AE86 that needs one performance-oriented front pad for both road and track use. Drivers prioritizing low dust, low noise, and normal street comfort should consider a more street-focused compound, while dedicated competition cars that consistently operate at high brake temperatures may benefit from a circuit-specific pad.

Project Mu AE86 Front Brake Pad Comparison
| Brake Pad | Primary Use | Rotor Temperature | Friction Coefficient | Character |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TYPE NS | Daily / Street | 0–400°C | 0.37–0.40μ | Street-focused with emphasis on lower noise and dust |
| B-Force | Performance Street / Canyon / Autocross / Light Track | 0–500°C | 0.32–0.45μ | Additional thermal capacity while retaining street usability |
| TYPE HC+ | Aggressive Street / Track Day | 0–800°C | 0.43–0.58μ | Higher-friction compound with a very broad operating range |
| HC M1 | Performance Street / Track Day | 50–800°C | 0.41–0.55μ | Linear modulation with strong high-temperature stability |
| Club Racer RC09 | Dedicated Circuit / Competition | 300–800°C | 0.42–0.55μ | Race-focused compound for sustained high-temperature braking |
TYPE NS is the street-focused choice for regularly driven AE86s where cold response, reduced dust, and reduced noise are priorities.
B-Force is the next step for a harder-driven street car. Its 0–500°C range adds thermal capacity for canyon driving, autocross, and occasional light track use without requiring elevated brake temperature before working effectively.
TYPE HC+ substantially increases friction capability while retaining a 0°C lower operating threshold, making it a strong aggressive-street and track-day crossover.
HC M1 provides a more refined high-performance character with linear pedal control, high-temperature stability, and a 50–800°C working range.
Club Racer RC09 is the dedicated circuit option. Its 300°C minimum operating temperature makes it substantially less suitable for normal cold street use.
