A Toyota with a 22RE does not automatically use the same clutch kit as every other 22RE truck. Year, 2WD or 4WD configuration, transmission, and turbo versus naturally aspirated application all matter. The biggest late-model split appears in 1993–1995 22RE trucks, where 2WD and 4WD applications use different clutch sizes.
Quick answer: which clutch fits my 22RE Toyota?
| Common 22R / 22RE application | Typical clutch size class | Fitment note |
|---|---|---|
| 1984–1988 naturally aspirated 22R / 22RE | About 225 mm | Verify exact year/model listing; turbo 22R-TE is separate. |
| 1989–1992 22RE Pickup / 4Runner | About 225 mm | Common OE-style fitment across 2WD/4WD applications cataloged for these years. |
| 1993–1995 22RE 2WD | About 225 mm | Do not order the larger late 4WD clutch solely because the engine is a 22RE. |
| 1993–1995 22RE 4WD | About 236 mm / 9-1/4 in | Uses the larger late 4WD application in the OE replacement catalog. |
Why “22RE” is not enough information
The engine code tells you the engine family, but Toyota used different clutch and flywheel combinations as the truck platform evolved. For 1993–1995, drivetrain configuration becomes especially important: a 2WD 22RE and a 4WD 22RE should not be treated as the same clutch application.
What about 22R-TE turbo trucks?
The turbocharged 22R-TE uses separate clutch applications and should not be selected from the naturally aspirated 22R/22RE table above. Turbo listings commonly use the larger 236 mm class and also have production/application splits around the 1987 model run. Confirm the exact turbo-specific product listing before ordering.
OE replacement vs. performance clutch
Fitment comes first; clutch type comes second. An OE-style replacement such as EXEDY is intended to preserve stock-like engagement and is appropriate for restoration, commuting, and normal trail use when torque output remains close to stock. A heavy-duty performance kit such as ACT HDSS can provide additional clamp capacity for harder use or modified vehicles, but it still has to match the correct year/drivetrain clutch size.
Check the flywheel at the same time
The clutch disc, pressure plate, and flywheel working surface must belong to the same application family. If a previous owner changed the drivetrain or flywheel, verify the installed diameter before ordering. During service, inspect the flywheel condition and follow the clutch manufacturer's resurfacing or replacement requirements.
Before ordering a 22RE clutch kit
- Confirm model year and whether the vehicle is a Pickup or 4Runner.
- Confirm the engine is naturally aspirated 22R/22RE versus turbo 22R-TE.
- Confirm 2WD or 4WD—especially for 1993–1995.
- Confirm manual transmission and identify any transmission swap.
- Verify clutch/flywheel diameter if the drivetrain history is unknown.
- Choose OE replacement or performance capacity only after fitment is confirmed.
