Overview
The ARB | Old Man Emu Heavy-Duty Front Torsion Bars are a matched front torsion-bar set for Toyota 4Runner and Pickup models equipped with torsion-bar Independent Front Suspension (IFS). They are designed to improve front suspension support and ride control, particularly on vehicles carrying additional front-end weight from bumpers, winches, recovery equipment, and other accessories.
These torsion bars can be used at stock front ride height or adjusted through the factory torsion-bar adjusters for up to approximately 2 inches of front lift, depending on vehicle weight, accessory load, suspension condition, and final alignment.
The bars use premium-grade powder-coated spring steel with precision-drawn construction, dropped-forged ends, and hardened and tempered splines for durability and consistent spring performance.
Key Features
- Heavy-duty front torsion-bar set
- Designed for Toyota torsion-bar IFS front suspension
- Suitable for stock ride height through approximately 2 inches of front lift
- Ride height is adjusted using the factory torsion-bar adjusters
- Premium-grade powder-coated spring steel
- Precision-drawn construction with dropped-forged ends
- Hardened and tempered for strength and spline durability
- Preset to help resist long-term sagging
- Uses factory torsion-bar mounting and adjustment points
- Side-specific left and right bars
Ride Height & Load Support
These Old Man Emu torsion bars are suitable for vehicles remaining at stock front ride height as well as lifted IFS setups. Using the factory torsion-bar adjustment system, the front suspension can be raised to approximately 2 inches above stock by increasing torsion-bar preload.
The exact amount of achievable lift will vary with vehicle weight, front accessory load, suspension condition, and adjustment. Final ride-height adjustment should preserve adequate droop travel and should be followed by a front-end alignment.
The heavy-duty spring rate is well suited to vehicles carrying constant front-end accessory weight such as a steel bumper, winch, skid plates, recovery equipment, or auxiliary lighting.

Fitment Notes
- 1990–1995 4Runner: fits original U.S.-market 2WD and 4WD torsion-bar IFS configurations. 2WD coverage is based on shared Toyota OEM torsion-bar and mounting applications; ARB's public application data does not separately identify the 2WD drivetrain.
- Toyota Pickup: 4WD only. Does not fit 2WD Pickup. The 2WD Pickup uses a different front torsion-bar application; do not use Pickup 2WD fitment to determine 4Runner 2WD compatibility.
- Independent Front Suspension (IFS) only.
- Can be used at stock front ride height or adjusted for up to approximately 2 inches of front lift.
- Front lift is achieved through the factory torsion-bar adjustment system; actual height will vary by vehicle setup and load.
- Does not fit 1984–1985 Toyota 4Runner or Pickup solid-front-axle applications.
- Left and right torsion bars are preset and must be installed on their designated sides.
- Uses the factory torsion-bar mounting and adjustment locations.
- Front ride height and alignment should be checked after installation and after any torsion-bar adjustment.

Supporting Suspension Components
These related components service the same suspension or steering system and may be useful when completing a broader chassis refresh. ARB | OME Nitrocharger Plus Front Shock Absorber — matching Old Man Emu front shock option for supported Toyota 4WD IFS applications.
For 1986–1989 Toyota 4Runner and 1986–1988 Toyota Pickup 4WD IFS builds, these torsion bars are included in the Old Man Emu Complete 2-Inch Suspension Lift Kit for 1986–1989 4Runner / 1986–1988 Pickup 4WD, which combines the matched front and rear OME suspension components in one package.
Which Torsion Bars Should You Buy?
Old Man Emu — Best for Heavy-Duty Support at a Lower Price
Choose Old Man Emu if you want quality heavy-duty torsion bars at a lower price. Both options serve the same front-end load-support purpose, and there is no verified performance advantage that makes the more expensive Dobinsons pair the necessary choice.
Dobinsons — Best for an Alternative When Old Man Emu Is Unavailable
Choose Dobinsons if the Old Man Emu pair is out of stock and you need a comparable heavy-duty replacement. It does the same front-end load-support job, but costs more.
Our Recommendation: Buy Old Man Emu first for the lower price. Both are quality options for the same application; if Old Man Emu is unavailable, Dobinsons is a great alternative that does the job at a higher price.
