ARB | OME Nitrocharger Plus Front Shock Absorber

For 1984–1995 Toyota 4Runner

Overview

The ARB Old Man Emu Nitrocharger Plus Front Shock Absorber offers application-specific front suspension damping for both generations of 1984–1995 Toyota 4Runner. The 1984–1985 solid-front-axle option is intended for matched Old Man Emu front leaf springs with approximately 2 inches of lift; the 1986–1995 IFS version covers original front-shock mounting points at stock height through approximately 2 inches of lift.

Choose your model-year range before selecting a Single shock or a matching Pair. The longer leaf-spring shock and the later IFS shock are not interchangeable.

Key Features

  • Vehicle-specific valving for the matching Toyota front suspension.
  • Heavy-duty twin-tube steel body and nitrogen gas charge.
  • High-flow piston and multi-disc damping control for repeatable suspension response.
  • Suitable for matched Old Man Emu suspension systems, on-road driving, hauling, and off-road travel.
  • Available individually or as a matching front pair.

Nitrocharger Plus Design

The heavy-duty twin-tube shock design protects its working cylinder in demanding conditions. The gas charge and application-specific damping help maintain suspension control as the front axle or independent suspension moves through road and trail irregularities.

Solid-front-axle 4Runners use longer shocks matched to the leaf-spring travel; 1986-on IFS models use a different mounting and travel application.

Stock Height & Lift Compatibility

The 1984–1985 solid-front-axle shocks are designed for matched Old Man Emu front leaf springs at approximately 2 inches of lift. The 1986–1995 IFS shocks support factory front ride height through approximately 2 inches of front lift.

For 1986–1989 4Runner 4WD IFS models, the matching Old Man Emu Heavy-Duty Front Torsion Bars support the front suspension and additional accessory weight. Front ride height is determined by the springs or torsion-bar suspension and its adjustment; the shock absorber itself does not create vehicle lift.

Which Front Shock Should You Buy?

KYB Excel-G — Best for Factory-Style Comfort & Value

Choose KYB Excel-G for an affordable, factory-style replacement that prioritizes comfortable everyday driving and original-style ride quality at stock height.

KYB Gas-a-Just — Best for Firmer Stock-Height Control

Choose KYB Gas-a-Just for firmer, more responsive monotube damping without stepping up to Bilstein. It offers a more controlled ride feel without changing suspension height or vehicle load capacity.

Bilstein B6 4600 — Best for Overall Stock-Height Performance

Choose Bilstein B6 4600 for premium monotube damping with controlled, responsive handling during daily driving, highway travel, and light off-road use.

ARB / Old Man Emu Nitrocharger Plus — Best for OME Suspension Builds & Demanding Use

Choose OME Nitrocharger Plus for matched OME suspension setups, frequent rough-road use, or vehicles carrying additional equipment weight. Suitable for supported 1986–1995 4WD IFS applications at stock height through approximately 2 inches of front lift.

Our Recommendation: For most stock-height Toyota 4Runner owners, Bilstein B6 4600 is our preferred all-around choice.
