Project Mu TYPE NS Rear Brake Pads
For 1983–1987 Toyota Corolla AE86 Trueno / Levin and 1985–1987 U.S.-Market Corolla Sport AE86 GT-S
Overview
Project Mu TYPE NS rear brake pads are a street-focused brake upgrade for rear-disc Toyota AE86 applications. The non-steel friction compound is designed to improve everyday braking response while keeping dust and noise lower than more aggressive performance compounds.
TYPE NS operates across a 0–400°C rotor-temperature range with a 0.37–0.40 μ friction coefficient, making it well suited to daily driving and spirited street use. This rear set is specifically for AE86 models equipped with the factory-style rear disc brake system.
Key Features
- Street-focused Project Mu TYPE NS friction compound
- Rear brake pad application
- Non-steel friction material
- Low-dust, low-noise design
- 0–400°C operating rotor-temperature range
- 0.37–0.40 μ friction coefficient
- Designed for factory rear-disc AE86 brake systems
TYPE NS Street Compound
The TYPE NS compound is intended for street use where predictable response, reduced dust, and lower noise are more important than sustained circuit-temperature capability. It provides a balanced step up from standard replacement pads without moving into a more aggressive race-oriented compound.

Project Mu AE86 Front Brake Pad Comparison
| Brake Pad | Primary Use | Rotor Temperature | Friction Coefficient | Character |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TYPE NS | Daily / Street | 0–400°C | 0.37–0.40μ | Street-focused with emphasis on lower noise and dust |
| B-Force | Performance Street / Canyon / Autocross / Light Track | 0–500°C | 0.32–0.45μ | Additional thermal capacity while retaining street usability |
| TYPE HC+ | Aggressive Street / Track Day | 0–800°C | 0.43–0.58μ | Higher-friction compound with a very broad operating range |
| HC M1 | Performance Street / Track Day | 50–800°C | 0.41–0.55μ | Linear modulation with strong high-temperature stability |
| Club Racer RC09 | Dedicated Circuit / Competition | 300–800°C | 0.42–0.55μ | Race-focused compound for sustained high-temperature braking |
TYPE NS is the street-focused choice for regularly driven AE86s where cold response, reduced dust, and reduced noise are priorities.
B-Force is the next step for a harder-driven street car. Its 0–500°C range adds thermal capacity for canyon driving, autocross, and occasional light track use without requiring elevated brake temperature before working effectively.
TYPE HC+ substantially increases friction capability while retaining a 0°C lower operating threshold, making it a strong aggressive-street and track-day crossover.
HC M1 provides a more refined high-performance character with linear pedal control, high-temperature stability, and a 50–800°C working range.
Club Racer RC09 is the dedicated circuit option. Its 300°C minimum operating temperature makes it substantially less suitable for normal cold street use.
