Overview

The ACT HDSS Heavy Duty Performance Street Clutch Kit is a performance clutch upgrade for 1979–1988 Toyota Pickup models equipped with a 20R, 22R, 22RE, or 22R-TE 4-cylinder engine and manual transmission.

The HDSS combines ACT's Heavy Duty pressure plate with a sprung organic Performance Street clutch disc, increasing clutch holding capacity while maintaining smooth, progressive engagement suitable for street-driven and off-road Toyota trucks. Depending on the application, torque capacity is 275 or 285 lb-ft at the engine.

Three configurations cover this year range. Non-turbo 20R, 22R, and 22RE trucks share one configuration, while turbocharged 22R-TE models use a larger clutch with an important production-date change during the 1987 model year.

HDSS Performance Street Design

The HDSS is designed for Toyota Pickup owners who need increased clutch capacity without the abrupt engagement associated with a puck-style race disc.

The Heavy Duty pressure plate increases clamp load, while the sprung organic disc provides progressive engagement and helps absorb drivetrain shock. This makes the HDSS well suited to daily drivers, restorations, trail trucks, off-road builds, and mildly modified engines.
