AISIN FHT-002 and FHT-018 manual locking hubs cover two different classic Toyota front-hub configurations. The easiest way to choose between them is to identify the front axle type first: FHT-002 is the 30-spline solid-front-axle configuration, while FHT-018 is the 26-spline IFS configuration.
Quick Comparison
| AISIN hub | Front-end type | Spline count | Common Preserve Rad fitment |
|---|---|---|---|
| FHT-002 | Factory solid front axle | 30 spline | 1979–1985 Pickup 4WD; 1984–1985 4Runner 4WD |
| FHT-018 | Factory IFS | 26 spline | 1986–1995 Pickup 4WD; 1986–1995 4Runner 4WD |
FHT-002: Solid Axle
The FHT-002 configuration matches the factory Toyota solid-front-axle hub used on the classic applications above. On an unmodified truck, the axle type and model year make this distinction straightforward.
FHT-018: Independent Front Suspension
The FHT-018 configuration is used on the later IFS front end. Factory Toyota 4WD Pickups and 4Runners moved from solid axle to IFS beginning with the 1986 model year in the classic U.S. applications covered here.
What About Solid-Axle Swaps?
A 1986–1995 chassis that has been converted to a solid front axle should not automatically receive the IFS hub just because of its model year. Match the locking hub to the installed axle, hub body and spline configuration. A swapped truck can legitimately require a solid-axle-style hub.
How to Verify Before Ordering
- Confirm the truck is 4WD.
- Identify solid front axle vs. IFS.
- Inspect the installed hub and axle spline configuration.
- Check for axle swaps or aftermarket hub conversions.
- Order a single hub only when replacing one side; use a pair for a complete matching front set.
