1st Gen 4Runner Suspension Guide: 1984–85 Solid Axle vs. 1986–89 IFS

The biggest suspension-fitment distinction within the 1984–1989 Toyota 4Runner is at the front of the truck. Factory 1984–1985 first-generation 4Runners use a solid front axle, while factory 1986–1989 models use independent front suspension (IFS). That change affects much more than springs: steering, axle components, hubs, lift parts, shocks, brake-line routing, and related hardware can all differ.

Because many 1986–1989 trucks have also been converted to a solid front axle, model year alone is not always enough. The safest approach is to identify what is physically installed before ordering suspension or steering parts.

1984–1985: Factory Solid Front Axle

On a factory solid-axle 4Runner, one rigid axle housing spans the front of the truck and the left and right wheels move with the same axle assembly. The front suspension uses leaf springs, and the axle contains the differential, axle shafts, knuckles, hubs, and related components.

Solid-axle-specific parts can include front leaf springs, shackles, spring bushings, U-bolts, axle service parts, knuckle and hub components, steering-linkage parts, and lift-system hardware. Some upgrades also depend on whether the truck retains stock-style steering or has been converted to crossover or high-steer.

1986–1989: Factory Independent Front Suspension

Factory 1986–1989 4Runners use independent front suspension. Each front wheel moves through its own control-arm assembly, the differential is mounted to the chassis, and CV axles transfer power to the front hubs. The suspension uses torsion bars rather than the front leaf springs found on the earlier solid-axle trucks.

IFS-specific parts can include control arms, ball joints, torsion bars, CV-related components, idler and steering-linkage components, differential-mounting parts, shocks, and IFS-specific lift hardware. These should not be assumed to interchange with 1984–1985 solid-axle front-end components.

How to Tell Which Front End You Have

A solid front axle has a single continuous axle housing running from one front wheel to the other, with the differential built into that housing. It will also have front leaf springs on these factory 1984–1985 applications.

An IFS truck has upper and lower control arms at each wheel, a chassis-mounted front differential, CV axles running outward to the hubs, and torsion bars. This difference is visually obvious once you look underneath the front of the vehicle.

What About Solid-Axle-Swapped 1986–1989 4Runners?

A solid-axle swap, often called an SAS, changes the fitment logic substantially. Once an IFS truck has been converted, the chassis year still matters for some items, but front suspension and steering parts must be selected around the installed axle, spring arrangement, steering system, and conversion design.

Before buying parts for an SAS truck, identify the axle housing, spring type and width, steering box and linkage, crossover or high-steer configuration, shock mounts, brake hoses, and lift height. Two 1987 4Runners with solid-axle conversions can use different supporting parts depending on how each conversion was built.

Lift Height and Steering Geometry Matter

Suspension lifts change more than ride height. Shock length, brake-line length, steering geometry, caster, driveline angles, bump stops, and tire clearance may all need attention. On solid-axle trucks, high-steer or crossover-steering setups can require specific arms, drag links, tie rods, and clearances. On IFS trucks, torsion-bar adjustment and lift components affect control-arm and CV geometry.

For this reason, Preserve Rad does not recommend selecting steering or suspension components only from a stated lift height. Match the part to the front-end type and read the product-level requirements for supporting components.

Before Ordering 1st Gen 4Runner Suspension or Steering Parts

  • Confirm the model year.
  • Confirm whether the truck is factory solid axle, factory IFS, or solid-axle swapped.
  • Identify the front axle or IFS hardware physically installed.
  • Note the steering setup, especially crossover or high-steer conversions.
  • Record lift height and the major lift components already on the truck.
  • Check for axle, hub, brake, or steering-box swaps.
