Trail-Gear Rock Assault Fully Built Front Axle
For 1979–1995 Toyota Pickup and 1985–1995 Toyota 4Runner 4WD leaf-spring solid-front-axle applications and leaf-spring solid-axle conversions
Overview
The Trail-Gear Rock Assault Fully Built Front Axle is a complete, brand-new heavy-duty front axle assembly for classic Toyota 4WD builds. Each axle is assembled with upgraded 30-spline drivetrain components, heavy-duty steering hardware, upgraded brakes, and the selected differential configuration, eliminating the need to rebuild a used donor axle.
Every configuration offered uses a right-hand differential drop and is built specifically for leaf-spring applications. Choose the housing width, Toyota third-member style and gear ratio, locker, and either locking hubs or Creeper flanges.
Key Features
- Complete new axle assembly: Built hub-to-hub from new components rather than refurbished junkyard parts.
- 30-spline drivetrain: Longfield 30-spline Birfields with 30-spline chromoly axle shafts.
- Heavy-duty knuckle hardware: Fully Loaded Six-Shooter knuckle kit with chromoly spindles, Trail Safe seals, and Super Metal knuckle studs.
- Upgraded brakes: Heavy-duty front brake rotors and calipers are included in the assembled axle.
- Steering hardware included: Heavy-duty tie rod and drag link are installed as part of the assembly.
- Forged knuckle balls: 1035-steel construction for increased strength over used factory housings.
- Heavy-duty axle tubes: 5/16-inch high-strength DOM tubes engage 5/8 inch farther into the center section.
- Internal housing reinforcement: 360-degree internal tube gusset supports the axle tubes inside the center section.
- Heavy-duty center section: Press-formed 1/4-inch plate-steel shell with a 1/2-inch differential mounting surface.
- Improved ground clearance: Approximately 3/8 inch more clearance beneath the axle tubes and at least 3/4 inch more beneath the differential housing than the referenced factory-style geometry.
Vehicle Fitment
- 1979–1983 Toyota Pickup – 1st Gen – 4WD: Factory leaf-spring solid front axle.
- 1984–1985 Toyota Pickup – 2nd Gen – 4WD: Factory leaf-spring solid front axle.
- 1986–1988 Toyota Pickup – 2nd Gen – 4WD: Requires a leaf-spring solid-axle conversion.
- 1989–1995 Toyota Pickup – 3rd Gen – 4WD: Requires a leaf-spring solid-axle conversion.
- 1985 Toyota 4Runner – 1st Gen – 4WD: Factory leaf-spring solid front axle.
- 1986–1989 Toyota 4Runner – 1st Gen – 4WD: Requires a leaf-spring solid-axle conversion.
- 1990–1995 Toyota 4Runner – 2nd Gen – 4WD: Requires a leaf-spring solid-axle conversion.
Fitment Notes
- Right-hand differential drop only. Every configuration uses a right-hand differential drop.
- Leaf-spring applications only. This assembled axle is not intended for 3-link or 4-link mounting as supplied.
- Solid-axle conversion required: 1986–1995 Pickup and 1986–1995 4Runner applications require a properly configured leaf-spring solid-axle conversion.
- The fully built axle is supplied bare; additional suspension bracketry should not be welded onto the assembled axle.
- External axle gussets are not included. The housing does include an internal 360-degree tube gusset.
- To obtain the housing's full differential ground clearance, the bottom of the differential housing flange must be ground flush with the axle housing.
- Professional installation by an experienced solid-axle Toyota technician or fabrication shop is recommended.
- For builds that need additional brake-hose length after suspension or solid-axle changes, see the Trail-Gear 26 in. Extended Brake Lines.
