Prothane Polyurethane Front Sway Bar Bushing Kit – 18mm or 25mm

For 1979–1988 Toyota Pickup 2WD

Overview

Restore crisp steering response and improve cornering stability with the Prothane Polyurethane Front Sway Bar Bushing Kit, designed for 1979–1988 Toyota Pickup 2WD models equipped with a factory front sway bar. Available for 18mm or 25mm sway bars, this direct-fit replacement kit replaces worn factory rubber bushings with premium polyurethane for improved handling, reduced body roll, and long-lasting durability.

Factory rubber sway bar bushings naturally deteriorate from age, heat, oil, moisture, and road debris. As they wear, excessive sway bar movement can reduce steering precision, increase body roll, and create unwanted suspension noise. Prothane's high-performance polyurethane bushings maintain a secure connection between the sway bar and chassis, helping your suspension perform as intended while providing superior resistance to wear and environmental exposure.

Whether you're restoring a classic Toyota Pickup, building an overland truck, or upgrading your daily driver, this kit delivers reliable suspension performance on both paved roads and off-road trails.

Polyurethane vs. OE Rubber: Choosing the Right Bushing for Your Build

When deciding between polyurethane and factory rubber bushings for your restoration, it helps to weigh their performance traits: Polyurethane delivers a dramatic upgrade in handling precision, steering response, and cornering stability by eliminating suspension slop, alongside exceptional resistance to oil, road grime, and dry rot that ensures it will outlast stock rubber many times over. On the flip side, because polyurethane is a significantly firmer elastomer, it transmits a more direct, stiffer road feel and requires proper lubrication during installation (using the included super grease) to prevent squeaking. While OE rubber provides a softer, more isolated ride that absorbs minor road vibrations, polyurethane is the ultimate choice for enthusiasts seeking tighter handling, superior durability, and long-term performance from their classic build.

Choosing the Correct Sway Bar Size

This kit is offered for 18mm and 25mm factory front sway bars.

Toyota used multiple sway bar diameters throughout production, and many trucks have been modified or repaired over the years. Because of this, vehicle year, trim level, engine, and VIN cannot reliably determine the correct sway bar size.

The only accurate method is to measure your factory front sway bar before ordering.

Measure Without Digital Calipers

You can easily determine the sway bar diameter using a standard open-end wrench:

  1. Clean a straight section of the front sway bar.
  2. Slide an 18mm open-end wrench over the sway bar.
  3. If the wrench fits snugly, your sway bar measures 18mm.
  4. If the wrench will not fit, your vehicle most likely has the 25mm sway bar.

Taking a few minutes to measure before ordering helps ensure you receive the correct bushings the first time.

Installation Notes

  • Measure your factory sway bar before ordering
  • Designed for factory-style front sway bars
  • Clean the sway bar before installing new bushings
  • Apply the supplied polyurethane grease to all contact surfaces
  • Inspect sway bar brackets and mounting hardware for wear or damage
  • Professional installation is recommended if suspension components are heavily worn
