KYB Stock Ride Height Rear Shock Absorber

For 1984–1995 Toyota 4Runner models with stock-height rear suspension.

Overview

Choose between KYB Excel-G rear shocks for factory-style comfort and KYB Gas-a-Just rear shocks for firmer, more responsive control. Both styles are direct-fit, non-adjustable replacements for stock-height Toyota 4Runners.

The rear mounting design changes after the first generation, so choose your 4Runner model-year range before choosing a ride preference and quantity.

Key Features

  • Two ride preferences: Choose factory-style twin-tube comfort or firmer monotube control.
  • Factory ride height: Direct-fit rear applications for original-height suspension.
  • Rear left or right: Each shock fits either rear side.
  • Single or pair: Replace one shock or both rear shocks together.
  • Application-specific mounts: Distinct first- and second-generation configurations.

Vehicle Fitment

Toyota 4Runner

  • 1984–1989 Toyota 4Runner – 1st Gen – 4WD: Excel-G or Gas-a-Just; rear left or right at stock ride height.

For U.S.-market Toyota 4Runner models with standard factory rear suspension and mounting locations.

Fitment Notes

  • Choose the configuration for your 4Runner model years. The 1984–1989 and 1990–1995 rear shocks use different upper mounts and are not interchangeable.
  • 1984–1989: Eyelet upper and lower mounts.
  • 1990–1995: Threaded-stem upper mount and eyelet lower mount.
  • 1990–1995 Excel-G: Fits 4WD models with the 22RE or 3VZ-E. Does not fit 2WD applications.
  • 1990–1995 Gas-a-Just: Fits 2WD and 4WD models.
  • For factory stock ride height. Lifted, lowered, or suspension-converted applications may require different shock travel or mounts.
  • The Gas-a-Just name does not indicate externally adjustable damping.
  • Toyota Pickup rear shocks use a separate application.

Which Rear Shock Should You Buy?

KYB Excel-G — Best for Factory-Style Comfort & Value

Choose KYB Excel-G for an affordable, factory-style replacement that prioritizes comfortable everyday driving and original-style ride quality at stock height. Its gas-charged twin-tube design emphasizes smooth, predictable damping.

KYB Gas-a-Just — Best for Firmer Stock-Height Control

Choose KYB Gas-a-Just for firmer, more responsive monotube damping without stepping up to Bilstein. It offers a more controlled ride feel without changing suspension height or vehicle load capacity.

Bilstein B6 4600 — Best for Overall Stock-Height Performance

Choose Bilstein B6 4600 for premium monotube damping with controlled, responsive handling during daily driving, highway travel, and light off-road use.

ARB / Old Man Emu Nitrocharger Plus — Best for OME Suspension Builds & Added Weight

Choose OME Nitrocharger Plus for 1984–1989 4Runner 4WD models with matched OME suspension setups, frequent rough-road use, or additional permanent equipment weight. Medium and Heavy valving options support stock height through approximately 2 inches of rear lift.

Our Recommendation: For most stock-height Toyota 4Runner owners, Bilstein B6 4600 is our preferred all-around choice. Choose KYB Excel-G for factory-style comfort and value, KYB Gas-a-Just for firmer budget-friendly control, or Old Man Emu Nitrocharger Plus for 1984–1989 4WD suspension builds and more demanding use.
