Overview
The HKS Hi-Power 409 Cat-Back Exhaust System is a performance exhaust for the Toyota AE86 powered by the 4A-GE, combining a straight-through muffler design with 60mm center piping and an over-differential layout.
The system uses SUH409 stainless steel for the exhaust piping, while the visible rear silencer and exhaust tip are constructed from SUS304 stainless steel. This combination provides corrosion resistance and durability while retaining the polished appearance of the rear section. HKS uses its Advantex continuous-fiber glass wool inside the silencer to control exhaust sound without relying on a highly restrictive muffler design.
With a 94mm exhaust tip and HKS-rated 97 dB close-proximity exhaust level, the Hi-Power 409 is the more aggressive AE86 exhaust option compared with the smaller and quieter HKS Sport/Legal system.

Exhaust Design & Sound
The Hi-Power 409 uses an over-differential layout designed specifically around the AE86 rear exhaust routing. The 60mm center pipe feeds a straight-through round silencer and exits through a large 94mm tip for a more aggressive appearance and exhaust note.
HKS rates the system at:
- Close-Proximity Exhaust Level: 97 dB
- Idle Exhaust Level: 73 dB
- Factory Close-Proximity Reference: 85 dB
The installed minimum exhaust-system ground clearance is approximately 150mm on the reference vehicle with stock suspension. Actual clearance depends on suspension height, tire size, and vehicle configuration.
