CUSCO Type RS Rear Limited Slip Differential
For 1983–1987 Toyota Corolla AE86 Trueno / Levin and 1985–1987 U.S.-Market Corolla Sport AE86 (GT-S) with 4A-GE and manual transmission
Overview
The CUSCO Type RS Rear Limited Slip Differential is a clutch-type mechanical LSD for the Toyota AE86 rear axle. Separate Early / Zenki and Late / Kouki differential versions are available, with a choice of 1.5-way or 2-way operation.
Type RS uses precision coil springs to establish controlled initial torque while keeping clutch-pack preload lower than a conventional high-preload plate LSD. The AE86 Type RS application uses 12 RS springs with a standard initial torque of 5–7 kgf·m, providing quick engagement with reduced drag and chatter.
Key Features
- CUSCO Type RS clutch-type mechanical LSD
- Rear differential application for AE86 4A-GE manual-transmission models with the factory open differential
- Separate Early / Zenki and Late / Kouki differential configurations
- Available in 1.5-way and 2-way versions
- 12 RS springs standard / maximum
- 5–7 kgf·m initial torque
- 1.5-way: 55° acceleration / 20° deceleration
- 2-way: 55° acceleration / 55° deceleration
Type RS Operation
The Type RS mechanism uses coil springs in the pressure-ring assembly to generate initial torque while allowing the clutch plates to operate with lower static preload. This reduces friction and helps the differential respond progressively as drivetrain torque increases.
The 1.5-way version provides strong locking under acceleration with reduced locking on deceleration, making it well suited to grip, touge, autocross, and mixed street/track use. The 2-way version uses the same locking angle in both directions for more consistent differential lock during acceleration and deceleration, which suits drift and more aggressive circuit driving.
Vehicle Fitment
Toyota Corolla AE86
- 05/1983–10/1985 Trueno (JDM) — 4A-GE, manual transmission, Early / Zenki, rear open differential
- 10/1985–04/1987 Trueno (JDM) — 4A-GE, manual transmission, Late / Kouki, rear open differential
- 05/1983–10/1985 Levin (JDM) — 4A-GE, manual transmission, Early / Zenki, rear open differential
- 10/1985–04/1987 Levin (JDM) — 4A-GE, manual transmission, Late / Kouki, rear open differential
- 1985 GT-S (U.S.-Market) — 4A-GE, manual transmission, Early / Zenki rear differential
- 1986–1987 GT-S (U.S.-Market) — 4A-GE, manual transmission, Late / Kouki rear differential
Fitment Notes
- Select the LSD by the installed rear differential generation, not exterior body styling alone.
- Early / Zenki and Late / Kouki differential configurations are different and require the matching LSD version.
- North American SR5 models retaining the factory SR5 rear differential are excluded.
- For an SR5 with a complete GT-S / T-Series rear axle conversion, match the LSD to the installed axle generation.
