Overview

The ARB Air Locker is a driver-selectable pneumatic locking differential for Toyota 8-inch rear axle applications using 30-spline, 1.31-inch axle shafts. With the locker disengaged, the differential operates like a conventional open differential for normal street driving. When activated with compressed air, the locker mechanically couples both axle shafts to the ring gear so both rear wheels receive drive torque together.

This application uses a 50 mm carrier-bearing journal, a 10-bolt Toyota 8-inch ring gear, and supports all gear ratios used with the applicable differential. It is designed for open-differential third members and does not replace a factory locker-equipped third member.

Differential & Carrier Bearing Compatibility

The Air Locker uses a 50 mm carrier-bearing journal. Bearing outside diameter must match the third-member housing.

4-Cylinder Toyota 8" Housing

Earlier 4-cylinder Toyota 8-inch third members originally use a smaller carrier journal. Installing this locker in those housings requires 50 mm ID × 80 mm OD conversion carrier bearings.

V6 / Turbo Toyota 8" Housing

V6/Turbo-style Toyota 8-inch third members use the larger carrier arrangement and require 50 mm ID × 83 mm OD carrier bearings.

Air System Requirements

An ARB air compressor is required to engage and disengage the locker and is sold separately. The locker includes the pneumatic activation hardware required at the differential, including the activation switch, solenoid valve, air line, and bulkhead fitting.

Air Locker Installation Components

An ARB High Output On-Board 12V Air Compressor is required to engage and disengage the Air Locker and is sold separately.

For a complete differential rebuild or locker installation, use the master overhaul kit that matches the installed Toyota 8-inch third member. The master kits include the application-specific carrier bearings, so a separate carrier-bearing add-on is not required when purchasing the correct master kit.
