Fortune Auto 500 Series Coilovers — True Rear

For 1983–1987 Toyota Corolla AE86 Trueno / Levin, 1985–1987 U.S.-Market Corolla Sport AE86 (GT-S), and 1984–1987 U.S.-Market Corolla Sport AE86 (SR5)

Overview

The Fortune Auto 500 Series is a Generation 8 single-adjustable coilover system engineered to balance everyday drivability with performance use. High Flow Digressive piston technology provides strong low-speed damping control for driver inputs such as roll, dive, and squat while allowing the damper to respond more compliantly to faster suspension movement over bumps and road irregularities.

This AE86 version uses a true rear coilover layout, moving the rear spring onto the damper assembly while retaining complete front coilovers with included front spindle assemblies. The product can be configured around three pre-set front/rear spring-rate combinations or a custom rate, three spring-brand choices, and four protection choices so the suspension can be tailored around how the car is actually used.

Choosing Your Spring Rate

Spring rate determines the basic stiffness balance of the chassis. Spring brand does not change the nominal rate you choose: a 6K spring remains a 6K spring whether it is Fortune Auto, Swift, or Hyperco. The spring-brand choice changes the spring's construction, mass, usable stroke, rate consistency, and dynamic response; the spring-rate choice determines how firm the basic setup is.

6K Front / 4K Rear — Street / Canyon

  • The most compliant of the three pre-set choices.
  • Best suited to street-driven cars, rougher pavement, canyon roads, and owners who value mechanical grip and ride quality over maximum roll resistance.
  • Allows more chassis movement than the firmer presets, which can make the car easier to settle over broken or uneven pavement.

7K Front / 5K Rear — Street / Track — Recommended

  • The balanced all-around choice for a mixed-use AE86.
  • Provides more support and less body movement than 6K / 4K while retaining more road compliance than 8K / 6K.
  • A strong choice for street, canyon, autocross, and occasional track use when the car still needs to work well on real roads.

8K Front / 6K Rear — Fortune Standard

  • The firmest pre-set offered here.
  • Prioritizes sharper response and additional roll, dive, and squat control over rough-road compliance.
  • Best suited to smoother pavement, aggressive driving, track-oriented setups, and customers who prefer a firmer suspension response.

Custom Front / Rear Spring Rate

  • For builds that fall outside the three pre-set combinations, including dedicated competition cars, unusually high-grip tire setups, substantial chassis or weight changes, or drivers with a specific front/rear balance target.
  • Preserve Rad will confirm the requested front and rear rates before the build order is submitted.

Choosing Your Spring Brand

Default Fortune Auto — Best for a complete Fortune Auto setup and strong value. The standard Fortune Auto springs use premium chrome-silicon spring material and are designed around performance, longevity, and ride quality. This is the straightforward choice for customers who want the complete 500 Series system without paying for an upgraded spring brand.

Swift Springs — Best for street, canyon, and mixed-use drivers prioritizing compliance, response, and usable suspension travel. Swift's proprietary HS5.TW spring alloy allows a given rate to be produced with fewer coils and less spring mass while retaining more usable stroke before coil bind. The material is designed to return to position quickly, helping the tire follow uneven pavement more consistently. At the same nominal spring rate, that combination can produce a smoother, more composed feel over bumps without requiring a softer rate. Swift linear springs are engineered for close rate consistency through their working stroke and strong rate retention over repeated use.

Hyperco Springs — Best for competition-focused builds and drivers prioritizing precise, repeatable spring behavior. Hyperco coilover springs use high-tensile spring material and are engineered for high usable deflection, low spring weight, tight rate linearity, and long-term retention of free length and spring rate. Hyperco has a long motorsports focus and manufactures its springs in the United States. For a track, drift, autocross, or highly setup-sensitive AE86, Hyperco is a strong choice when predictable rate behavior and repeatability are primary priorities.

Which spring brand should you choose? Choose Fortune Auto for the best-value complete system, Swift when ride quality, rough-road grip, lower spring mass, and usable stroke are the priorities, or Hyperco when competition use, rate consistency, repeatability, and American-made spring construction matter most. None of the three brands automatically makes the chosen spring rate softer or stiffer; the rate itself still controls nominal stiffness.

Protection Add-On Guide

The protection options address two different types of wear. Protective coilover covers shield the outside of the suspension assembly from contamination and weather exposure, while coil spring sleeves reduce spring-to-spring contact noise and coating wear. They can be used separately or together.

Protective Covers — Full Set (4 Covers)

  • Includes four 14-inch protective covers for full front-and-rear coverage.
  • Made from a proprietary synthetic blend with a zip-lock closure and felt line guides to help keep each cover securely positioned.
  • Helps shield the threaded shock body, adjustment areas, springs, and seals from dirt, moisture, road grit, and debris.
  • Reducing contamination around the threads and collars helps protect against corrosion and buildup that can make future suspension adjustment and service more difficult.
  • Especially worthwhile for cars driven in rain, dusty conditions, dirty mountain roads, or any environment where the coilovers will see regular road grime.

Coil Spring Sleeves — Full Set (8 Sleeves)

  • Includes eight sleeves — two per spring across all four springs.
  • Works with Fortune Auto, Swift, and Hyperco spring choices.
  • Placed around the spring coils to reduce direct coil-to-coil impact, helping reduce suspension NVH and unnecessary wear on the spring's protective coating.
  • An adhesive inner lining helps the sleeve stay snug against the spring.
  • Best for customers who want to reduce spring contact noise and protect the spring finish, especially on a performance suspension that sees frequent compression and rebound cycles.

Protective Covers + Coil Spring Sleeves — Full Set (4 Covers + 8 Sleeves)

  • Combines the two protection strategies for the most complete coverage.
  • The four outer covers help protect the coilover bodies, threads, springs, and seals from environmental contamination, while the eight spring sleeves address coil contact, NVH, and coating wear at the spring itself.
  • Best for owners who plan to keep the coilovers long term, regularly drive the car, or simply want to protect a premium suspension investment as thoroughly as possible.

None is appropriate for customers who do not want additional protection accessories. The coilovers remain fully functional without these add-ons; the covers and sleeves are preventative protection and refinement options rather than required suspension components.

Vehicle Fitment

Toyota Corolla AE86

  • 1984–1987 SR5 (U.S.-Market) — 4A-C, Manual / Automatic

Fitment Notes

  • Front spindles are included.
  • The true rear layout transfers rear spring load through the rear damper mounting points, so rear chassis and shock-mount condition should be appropriate for coilover spring loading.
  • Non-stock 500 Series coilovers have an approximate 4–8 week build time. Lead times can change with configuration and production volume.
  • Fortune Auto 500 Series coilovers are intended for off-road / motorsports use only.
