Toyota R150F vs. R151F Transmission Guide | 4Runner & Pickup

The R150F and R151F are both Toyota R-series five-speed 4WD transmissions, but they should not be treated as interchangeable names. Their factory engine and transfer-case pairings are different, and that difference matters when ordering transfer-case adapters, shifters and drivetrain parts.

Quick Comparison

Transmission Common classic-truck application Factory transfer-case context
R151F 1986–1987 22R-TE Turbo 4WD 23-spline gear-driven RF1A
R150F 1988–1995 3VZ-E V6 4WD Factory chain-driven VF1A

R151F: Turbo 22R-TE Application

The R151F is the transmission most closely associated with the factory 22R-TE Turbo 4WD Toyota Pickup and 4Runner. In this classic-truck application it uses a 23-spline interface with the gear-driven RF1A transfer case.

Shifter position can also vary. Transfer-case suppliers commonly list 1986–1987 R151F setups as either forward-shift or top-shift depending on the original seating/shifter configuration.

R150F: 3VZ-E V6 Application

The R150F is commonly found behind the 3VZ-E 3.0L V6 in 1988–1995 4WD Pickups and 4Runners. Although the transmission side is 23-spline, the factory V6 truck uses a VF1A chain-driven transfer case, not the 4-cylinder RF1A gear-driven case.

Converting an R150F-equipped V6 truck to an RF1A-based single or dual transfer case therefore requires the correct V6/RF1A adapter system. A 23-spline count by itself does not make a transfer case a direct bolt-on.

Why Swapped Trucks Need Hardware-Based Identification

Many Toyota trucks have had engine, transmission or transfer-case swaps. A 1990 truck does not guarantee an R150F, and a 22RE truck can be converted to R-series components. Before ordering, identify:

  • Engine currently installed.
  • Transmission family and shifter location.
  • Factory or swapped transfer case.
  • 21-spline vs. 23-spline transfer-case input requirement.
  • Top-shift vs. forward-shift configuration.
