Toyota 4Runner & Pickup Clutch Identification Guide | 20R, 22R, 22RE, 22R-TE & 3VZ-E

Classic Toyota truck clutch fitment is not just “4-cylinder vs. V6.” Toyota used different clutch kits by engine, model year, production date and drivetrain, and several important splits occur within the 1979–1995 Pickup and 1984–1995 4Runner range.

Common EXEDY OE-Style Reference Map

Application Common catalog reference
1979–1980 Pickup 20R EXEDY 16032
1981–1988 Pickup non-turbo 22R/22RE EXEDY 16057
1984 4Runner 22R EXEDY 16084
1985–1988 4Runner non-turbo 22R/22RE EXEDY 16057
1989–1992 22RE Pickup/4Runner EXEDY 16058
1993–1995 22RE 2WD EXEDY 16058
1993–1995 22RE 4WD EXEDY 16069
1988–1995 3VZ-E V6 EXEDY 16059

This table is a starting point for stock-style applications. Always follow the fitment on the specific product listing because modified trucks can use a different flywheel, transmission or clutch diameter.

The 22R-TE Turbo Production Split

The factory Turbo application has an important 1987 production split. Catalogs separate through 05/1987 from 06/1987 and later. For a 1987 22R-TE truck, check the certification label before ordering.

The 1993–1995 22RE 2WD vs. 4WD Split

Another major split occurs on 1993–1995 22RE trucks. The 2WD application continues with the smaller stock-style configuration represented by EXEDY 16058, while 4WD uses the larger configuration represented by EXEDY 16069.

Why Engine Swaps and Transmission Swaps Matter

A truck that now has a W56, R151F, R150F or swapped engine may no longer use the clutch originally cataloged for its VIN. When the drivetrain is modified, confirm:

  • Engine currently installed.
  • Transmission currently installed.
  • Flywheel/clutch diameter.
  • Input-shaft spline count and diameter.
  • 2WD vs. 4WD.
  • Production date when the listing calls for it.
