1979–1995 Toyota Pickup Generation & Identification Guide

For Preserve Rad fitment, 1979–1995 Toyota Pickups are organized into three practical catalog groups: 1979–1983, 1984–1988, and 1989–1995. These are the ranges you will see throughout our vehicle collections and product titles.

Toyota’s worldwide Hilux lineage counts earlier generations that were never part of Preserve Rad’s catalog, so Toyota historical material may call these the fourth, fifth and sixth generations. On Preserve Rad, we use the simpler catalog shorthand 1st Gen Pickup, 2nd Gen Pickup and 3rd Gen Pickup for the 1979–1995 U.S.-market ranges we support.

Preserve Rad Pickup Generation Chart

Preserve Rad group Years Major fitment cue
1st Gen Pickup 1979–1983 Earlier body/chassis family; 4WD trucks use a solid front axle
2nd Gen Pickup 1984–1988 New body; 1984–1985 4WD solid axle, 1986–1988 4WD IFS
3rd Gen Pickup 1989–1995 Later body/chassis family; 4WD uses IFS from the factory

1979–1983 Pickup

This range is especially important for solid-front-axle components, early drivetrain parts and restoration pieces. On a 4WD truck, verify that the original solid axle is still installed before ordering hub, knuckle, steering or axle parts.

1984–1988 Pickup

The 1984–1988 generation contains one of the biggest chassis splits in classic Toyota fitment. Factory 1984–1985 4WD Pickups retained the solid front axle, while factory 1986–1988 4WD trucks moved to independent front suspension. That affects hubs, suspension, steering, axles and many brake-related parts.

1989–1995 Pickup

The 1989–1995 Pickup is a separate body and chassis generation. Engine, transmission, brake and drivetrain options expanded, and many parts within this range still depend on 2WD versus 4WD, cab/bed configuration, engine, transmission and production details.

Do Not Use Generation Alone for Fitment

Generation is a starting point, not the final answer. A 1990 Pickup may use different brake, suspension or drivetrain parts depending on 2WD/4WD, engine and equipment. A modified truck can also have an axle, transmission, transfer case or engine from a different year.

What to Record Before Ordering

  • Model year.
  • 2WD or 4WD.
  • Engine code.
  • Manual or automatic transmission and transmission code when known.
  • Cab and bed configuration when the product requires it.
  • Front suspension type: solid axle, IFS or solid-axle swap.
  • Any major drivetrain or brake conversions.
