Drivetrain fitment on a 1984–1988 Toyota Pickup can depend on far more than the model year. Start With 2WD vs. 4WD
The first split is whether the truck is 2WD or 4WD. A factory 4WD truck has a front driveline system and transfer case that a 2WD truck does not. The front axle or IFS hardware, hubs, driveshafts, transfer-case arrangement, and transmission interfaces can therefore change the parts required.
Modified trucks can blur that distinction. If a truck has received an engine, transmission, transfer-case, axle, or drivetrain conversion, match parts to the installed components rather than assuming that the original chassis specification is still intact.
Engine Family Affects Drivetrain Fitment
Engine choice matters because bellhousing patterns, flywheels, clutches, starters, transmission combinations, and supporting hardware can differ. Toyota transfer-case applications can differ by transmission and configuration, and modified trucks may use dual cases or aftermarket adapters.
Do not assume that a transfer-case part fits simply because the truck is a 1984–1988 4WD Pickup. Use the product page's transmission and transfer-case requirements, and compare them with the case physically installed.
Axle, Differential, Gear Ratio and Spline Count
Axle and differential parts can depend on axle type, front or rear application, differential design, gear ratio, spline count, hub arrangement, and whether the truck has been converted from its original configuration.
