CUSCO Close Ratio Transmission Gear Set
For 1985–1987 Toyota Corolla Sport GT-S & 1983–1987 Toyota Corolla Levin / Sprinter Trueno AE86 with 1.6L 4A-GE / 4A-GEU
Overview
The CUSCO Close Ratio Transmission Gear Set upgrades the AE86 T50 5-speed manual with performance-oriented 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear ratios designed to reduce the large spacing found in the factory transmission.
Choose between Type C for a more balanced street-and-track configuration or Type D for a more competition-focused setup with a taller 1st gear and more aggressive upper-ratio progression.
Both configurations include replacement 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears with the corresponding countershaft. The factory 4th and 5th gear ratios are retained, maintaining the conventional 1-2-3-4-5 shift pattern.
Key Features
- Close-ratio transmission upgrade for the Toyota T50 5-speed manual
- Choice of Type C or Type D gearing
- Replaces 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears
- Includes the matching countershaft
- Retains factory 4th and 5th gear ratios
- Conventional 1-2-3-4-5 shift pattern
- Designed for rear-wheel-drive AE86 4A-GE / 4A-GEU applications
- Reduces RPM drop through the lower and middle gears compared with the factory T50 ratio spread
- Suitable for performance street, circuit, autocross, and competition-oriented builds depending on configuration
Gear Ratio Comparison
| Gear | Factory T50 | Type C | Type D |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | 3.587 | 2.701 | 2.471 |
| 2nd | 2.022 | 1.696 | 1.696 |
| 3rd | 1.384 | 1.281 | 1.237 |
| 4th | 1.000 | 1.000 | 1.000 |
| 5th | 0.861 | 0.861 | 0.861 |
Both options substantially change the lower three gears while leaving 4th and 5th unchanged.
Type C vs. Type D
Type C – Balanced Close Ratio
Type C uses a 2.701 first gear, giving it a shorter 1st gear than Type D. This makes pulling away from a stop easier while still providing significantly closer performance-oriented gearing than the standard T50.
Type C is the stronger all-around choice for:
- Performance street builds
- Street / track cars
- Autocross
- Canyon and touge-style driving
- Naturally aspirated or moderately modified 4A-GE engines
- Drivers who still want reasonable low-speed usability
Type D – Race-Oriented Close Ratio
Type D uses a taller 2.471 first gear and a taller 3rd gear than Type C. The configuration is better suited to an AE86 that spends most of its time being driven hard and where maintaining momentum and engine speed is more important than easy stop-and-go operation.
Type D is better suited for:
- Circuit and competition builds
- High-RPM 4A-GE engines
- Dedicated track cars
- Builds using a higher-numerical performance final drive
- Drivers prioritizing race-oriented gearing over street convenience
Because Type D has the taller first gear, it can require more clutch work when starting from a stop than Type C or the factory transmission.
