Overview

The CSF Heavy-Duty 3-Row All-Metal Radiator is an upgraded cooling solution for 1979–1983 1st Gen Toyota Pickup 2WD and 4WD models equipped with the 2.2L 20R or 2.4L 22R engine.

Built with a three-row copper core and brass tanks, this radiator provides durable, serviceable all-metal construction with additional cooling capacity over common factory-style 2-row and light-duty replacement radiators. The three-row design is commonly referred to by enthusiasts as a 3-core radiator.

This radiator should be considered a heavy-duty cooling upgrade rather than a stock-style replacement. Heavy-Duty 3-Row Upgrade

Many early Toyota trucks use relatively thin factory-style or replacement radiators that are adequate for a properly functioning stock cooling system. This CSF radiator uses a three-row copper core to provide additional coolant-tube surface area and cooling reserve.

The additional capacity can be particularly beneficial for trucks operating in:

• Modified or restored applications

• Other conditions that place additional demand on the cooling system

A 3-row radiator is commonly referred to as a 3-core radiator, although 3-row is the technically correct radiator terminology.

For owners already replacing an aging radiator, Preserve Rad recommends upgrading to the heavy-duty 3-row configuration rather than installing another basic light-duty replacement when the correct application is available.

Heavy-Duty Upgrade vs. Stock-Style Replacement

This radiator is not intended to simply duplicate the dimensions and construction of every original factory radiator. Its thicker three-row core is designed as a heavy-duty upgrade.

Because of the increased core thickness, installation clearances can differ from a stock-style radiator. Depending on the fan shroud, mounting hardware, and cooling-system components currently installed on the truck, installation may require:

• Minor fan-shroud trimming or clearance adjustment

• Different fan-shroud hardware

• Minor mounting-hole alignment adjustment

• Clearance changes around surrounding components

• Other small installation modifications

These trucks are more than four decades old, and many have already had radiators, fan shrouds, engines, or other cooling-system components replaced. Existing vehicle configuration should therefore be inspected before installation.

Material & Construction

The radiator uses a three-row copper core with single-piece brass tanks. Coated steel side channels provide structural support, while reinforced inlet and outlet connections add durability.

Copper/brass construction is particularly well suited to long-term ownership of a classic Toyota because a properly equipped radiator shop can often solder, repair, or recore the radiator rather than requiring complete replacement after minor damage.

An integrated transmission cooler supports automatic-transmission applications. Manual-transmission trucks can use the same radiator with the transmission-cooler connections left unused.
