CSF Heavy-Duty 3-Row All-Metal Radiator

For 1984–1988 2nd Gen Toyota Pickup 4WD with 22R / 22RE or 1988 3VZ-E

Overview

The CSF Heavy-Duty 3-Row All-Metal Radiator is an upgraded cooling solution for 1984–1988 2nd Gen Toyota Pickup 4WD models equipped with the naturally aspirated 2.4L 22R / 22RE or 1988 3.0L 3VZ-E V6.

Built with a three-row copper core and brass tanks, this radiator provides durable all-metal construction and additional cooling reserve compared with common factory-style 2-row replacement radiators. The 3-row design—often referred to as a 3-core radiator—is well suited to hot climates, off-road use, towing, larger tires, added vehicle weight, and other demanding operating conditions.

This is a heavy-duty cooling upgrade rather than an exact reproduction of every original radiator configuration, so minor fan-shroud, mounting, or clearance adjustments may occasionally be required.

Factory 22R-TE turbo applications use a different radiator configuration and are not supported.

Key Features

  • Heavy-duty 3-row copper radiator core

  • Durable brass tank construction

  • Fully all-metal design

  • Additional cooling reserve over common basic 2-row replacements

  • Integrated automatic-transmission cooler

  • Supports automatic and manual transmission applications

  • Downflow radiator configuration

  • Separate naturally aspirated 4-cylinder and V6 configurations

  • Copper/brass construction can often be repaired or recored by a properly equipped radiator shop

  • Designed for 2nd Gen Toyota Pickup 4WD applications

Heavy-Duty 3-Row Upgrade

Many classic Toyota trucks use relatively thin factory-style replacement radiators that are adequate for a properly functioning stock cooling system. A heavy-duty 3-row radiator adds additional coolant-tube and heat-exchange capacity for vehicles operating under more demanding conditions.

The additional cooling reserve is particularly useful for trucks subjected to:

  • Hot climates

  • Slow-speed trail driving

  • Towing or hauling

  • Larger tires

  • Steel bumpers, armor, or added vehicle weight

  • Extended idling

  • Engine modifications

  • Increased engine load

For most naturally aspirated classic Toyota Pickup owners replacing an aging radiator, Preserve Rad recommends stepping up to a quality 3-row configuration when available.

Because the larger core is a heavy-duty upgrade rather than an exact copy of every original radiator, final fan-shroud and surrounding-component clearance should be checked during installation.

Material & Construction

The radiator uses traditional copper-and-brass construction with a three-row copper core and brass tanks.

This construction is particularly well suited to long-term ownership of a classic Toyota because a properly equipped radiator shop can often solder, repair, or recore the radiator after minor damage.

Automatic-transmission applications use the integrated transmission cooler, while manual-transmission trucks leave the cooler connections unused.

Vehicle Fitment

Toyota Pickup

  • 1984–1988 Toyota Pickup – 2nd Gen – 4WD – 2.4L 22R / 22RE – Automatic & Manual

  • 1988 Toyota Pickup – 2nd Gen – 4WD – 3.0L 3VZ-E V6 – Automatic & Manual

Fitment Notes

  • 4WD models only

  • Does not fit factory 22R-TE turbo applications

  • Does not fit 2WD applications

  • 22R / 22RE configuration covers naturally aspirated 2.4L 4-cylinder applications

  • 3.0L 3VZ-E V6 configuration applies to 1988 models

  • Automatic models use the integrated transmission cooler

  • Manual-transmission models leave the transmission-cooler connections unused

  • This is a heavy-duty 3-row upgrade rather than an exact reproduction of the common factory-style radiator

  • The larger radiator core can affect fan-shroud and surrounding-component clearance

  • Fan-shroud trimming, different mounting hardware, hole-alignment adjustment, or other minor modifications may be required

  • Previously replaced radiators, fan shrouds, or other cooling-system components may differ from the vehicle's original configuration

CSF 3-Row vs. Koyorad HH Aluminum Radiator

The CSF Heavy-Duty 3-Row and Koyorad HH Aluminum Radiator are both cooling upgrades for classic Toyota trucks, but they are designed around different priorities.

CSF Heavy-Duty 3-Row Koyorad HH Aluminum
Construction Copper core / brass tanks All-aluminum
Core Design Traditional heavy-duty 3-row 48 mm high-density aluminum core
22R / 22RE Yes Yes
3VZ-E V6 Yes, listed configuration No
Manual Transmission Yes Yes
Automatic Transmission Yes No
Transmission Cooler Integrated No factory automatic-transmission cooler
Weight Heavier Lighter
Repairability Often repairable or recoreable Requires specialized aluminum repair
Appearance Traditional black OEM-style appearance Aluminum performance appearance
Best For Street, off-road, towing, restoration, and long-term ownership Performance-focused naturally aspirated manual-transmission trucks

Choose the CSF 3-Row if you want traditional copper/brass construction, an integrated automatic-transmission cooler, V6 availability, additional cooling reserve, and long-term serviceability.

Choose the Koyorad HH if you have a naturally aspirated 22R or 22RE with a manual transmission and specifically want a lightweight, high-density all-aluminum performance radiator.

Neither radiator in this comparison should be treated as a replacement for the factory 22R-TE turbo radiator configuration.

Row count alone should also not be used to compare the two designs. The CSF uses a traditional three-row copper/brass core, while the Koyorad uses a thick 48 mm high-density aluminum core.
