NTK Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor

For 1984–1989 Toyota MR2 AW11 equipped with the matching original coolant-sensor connector.

Overview

This NTK coolant-temperature sensor provides the engine ECU with the temperature input used to adjust fueling. It fits 1984–1989 Toyota MR2 AW11 with the specified naturally aspirated 4A-GE or supercharged 4A-GZE applications and original sensor connections.

The wire-clip and molded-latch options use different connector interfaces. Match the original connector and the production limits below, particularly around the August 1988 changeover. Both are thermistor-based replacement sensors; neither replaces the dashboard temperature-gauge sender.

Key Features

  • Engine-management coolant input for the specified MR2 applications
  • Brass threaded sensor body with an integral sensing probe
  • Two male blade terminals within one rectangular female connector housing
  • Wire-clip and molded-latch options matched to the original harness connection
  • Thermistor-based temperature sensing with no attached wiring harness

Vehicle Fitment

Select the connector option matching the original sensor connection and the production range.

Toyota MR2 — AW11 / MK1

  • 1984–1988: JDM / 4A-GE naturally aspirated; 1984–August 1988 production; wire-clip connector
  • 1986–1988: JDM / 4A-GZE Supercharged; August 1986–August 1988 production; wire-clip connector
  • 1985–1988: U.S.-Market / 4A-GE naturally aspirated; December 1984–August 1988 production; wire-clip connector
  • 1988: U.S.-Market / 4A-GZE Supercharged; August 1987–August 1988 production; wire-clip connector
  • 1988–1989: JDM / 4A-GE naturally aspirated or 4A-GZE Supercharged; August 1988–1989 production; molded-latch connector
  • 1989: U.S.-Market / 4A-GE naturally aspirated or 4A-GZE Supercharged; August 1988–1989 production; molded-latch connector

Fitment Notes

  • August 1988 is a shared transition month. Match the original connector housing, keying and retention style; year, color or two-terminal count alone cannot distinguish these options. A missing or broken wire clip does not turn an early connector into the molded-latch type.
  • Does not replace the dashboard gauge sender, cooling-fan switch, cold-start time switch or EGR-temperature sensor.
  • Engine swaps, altered wiring or connectors, ECU changes, adapters and replacement sensor housings require configuration-specific fitment confirmation.
  • The 1984 MR2 application is JDM only. U.S.-market coverage starts with the 1985 model year. Supercharged coverage starts in 1986 JDM production and the 1988 U.S. model year.
