DENSO OE Upstream Oxygen Sensor
For 1985–1989 U.S.-market Toyota MR2 AW11 with 4A-GE or 4A-GZE
Overview
This DENSO direct-fit upstream oxygen sensor restores the factory narrowband exhaust-feedback signal used by the AW11 engine-management system. DENSO is a Toyota OE supplier, making these application-specific sensors a strong factory-style replacement choice for original 4A-GE and 4A-GZE configurations.
The AW11 changed oxygen-sensor design during its production run. Early 1985–1987 4A-GE cars use a one-wire unheated sensor, while 1988–1989 cars use heated four-wire sensors. Naturally aspirated 4A-GE and Supercharged 4A-GZE applications use different later sensors and should be selected by engine.
Key Features
- Direct-fit DENSO construction with application-specific wiring and connector configuration
- Narrowband zirconia sensing for the factory upstream fuel-feedback circuit
- One-wire unheated configuration for 1985–1987 4A-GE applications
- Four-wire heated configurations for 1988–1989 4A-GE and 4A-GZE applications
- Engine-specific late-model selection keeps naturally aspirated and Supercharged applications clearly separated
Vehicle Fitment
Toyota MR2 (AW11 / MK1) — U.S.-Market
- 1985–1987: 4A-GE naturally aspirated — one-wire unheated upstream sensor
- 1988–1989: 4A-GE naturally aspirated — four-wire heated upstream sensor
- 1988–1989: 4A-GZE Supercharged — four-wire heated upstream sensor
Fitment Notes
- 1985–1987 and 1988–1989 sensor configurations are not interchangeable. Match the sensor to the factory wiring and model-year configuration.
- 1988–1989 naturally aspirated and Supercharged applications use different sensors. Match the later sensor to the installed engine.
- For engine swaps, harness conversions, or modified exhaust systems, match the sensor to the installed engine-management wiring and exhaust interface rather than chassis year alone.

Which Oxygen Sensor Should You Buy?
DENSO — Best for a Trusted, Factory-Style Replacement
Choose DENSO if the correct sensor for your MR2 is available and you want a dependable direct-fit replacement from a long-standing Toyota original-equipment supplier. Its oxygen sensors are engineered for vehicle-specific fit and factory-style function.
Prefer NTK? The NTK Upstream Oxygen Sensor for Toyota MR2 AW11 is another credible OE-quality option from an established original-equipment sensor manufacturer. Choose its corresponding direct-fit sensor if DENSO is unavailable or you prefer NTK.
Our Recommendation: Match your MR2's model year, engine, original wiring, and sensor configuration first. Then choose the correctly matched DENSO or NTK sensor based on availability, price, and brand preference. Neither brand has a demonstrated reliability advantage across these AW11 applications.
