North American AE86 Corolla Sport models are commonly divided into SR5 and GT-S configurations. The trim difference affects far more than badges and interior equipment: engine, fuel system, rear axle, brakes and many drivetrain parts can differ.
SR5 vs. GT-S at a Glance
| Feature | SR5 | GT-S |
|---|---|---|
| Common U.S. engine | 4A-C SOHC | 4A-GE 16V DOHC EFI |
| Rear brakes | Commonly drum | Commonly disc |
| Rear axle/differential | Smaller SR5-type rear axle | Larger GT-S-type rear axle; LSD was available in some configurations |
| Transmission | T50 five-speed on manual cars, with SR5-specific surrounding drivetrain details | T50 five-speed on manual cars, with GT-S-specific engine/flywheel/drivetrain details |
Engine Difference: 4A-C vs. 4A-GE
The SR5’s 4A-C is a carbureted single-overhead-cam engine. The GT-S uses the fuel-injected twin-cam 4A-GE 16V. That changes intake, exhaust, fuel, ignition, cooling, clutch and many engine-service parts. Do not order an “AE86 engine part” without confirming which engine is in the car.
Rear Axle and Brake Difference
Factory North American GT-S cars are commonly associated with rear disc brakes, while SR5 cars commonly use rear drums. The axle assemblies also differ. This matters for brake parts, wheel bearings, differential components, axles and limited-slip differential upgrades.
Because GT-S axle swaps into SR5 cars are common, the current brake and axle hardware is more important than the badge on a modified vehicle.
How to Check a Modified AE86
- Identify the engine currently installed.
- Look at the rear brakes: disc rotor/caliper vs. drum.
- Inspect the rear axle and differential identification where possible.
- Confirm manual vs. automatic transmission.
- Check whether the fuel system and wiring match the original trim.
- Compare the installed hardware before ordering trim-specific parts.
What About 4A-GE-Swapped SR5 Cars?
An SR5 chassis with a 4A-GE swap does not automatically become mechanically identical to a factory GT-S. The rear axle, brakes, fuel system, wiring, driveshaft, differential and other supporting components may remain SR5-spec or may have been converted separately. Order each part around the system actually installed.
