DFC True Balanced Rear Brake Drums – Standard & Heavy Duty

For 1986–1995 Toyota 4Runner

Overview

The Dynamic Friction Company (DFC) True Balanced Rear Brake Drum is a direct-fit replacement for the rear drum brakes used on 1986–1995 Toyota 4Runner applications.

This listing offers two replacement choices: Standard and Heavy Duty. Both fit the same applicable rear brake configuration. The Standard drum provides a lighter OE-style replacement, while the Heavy-Duty drum uses a heavier casting with greater thermal mass for vehicles subjected to more demanding braking conditions.

When replacing both rear drums, either version may be selected and installed as a matched pair. When replacing only one drum, match the Standard or Heavy-Duty type already installed on the opposite side.

Key Features

  • Direct-fit rear brake drum for 1986–1995 Toyota 4Runner
  • Choice of Standard or Heavy-Duty construction
  • Both versions fit the same applicable rear brake configuration
  • Standard and Heavy Duty may be interchanged when installed as a matched pair
  • Six-hole mounting configuration
  • Floating drum design
  • Precision-machined braking surfaces
  • Precision cut and mill balanced for smooth operation
  • Black high-temperature protective coating
  • Available individually or as a pair

Standard vs. Heavy Duty: Which Should You Choose?

Both versions share the critical mounting dimensions required for the applicable Toyota 4Runner rear brake system. The primary difference is drum weight and thermal mass.

Standard Drum

  • Nominal Drum Diameter: 295 mm
  • Maximum Service Diameter: 297 mm
  • Outside Diameter: 342.5 mm
  • Overall Height: 83 mm
  • Center Hole Diameter: 106 mm
  • Mounting Holes: 6
  • Bolt Circle: 139.7 mm
  • Approximate Weight: 21.5 lb

The Standard drum is approximately 2.7 lb lighter per side and is the best choice for most normally driven 4Runners.

Advantages

  • Lower unsprung and rotating mass
  • Well suited to daily and normal street driving
  • Good choice for stock or lightly modified vehicles
  • Appropriate for restoration builds and normal brake service

Considerations

  • Less thermal mass than the Heavy-Duty version
  • Less suited to frequent sustained or repeated heavy braking

Heavy-Duty Drum

  • Nominal Drum Diameter: 294.2 mm
  • Maximum Service Diameter: 297 mm
  • Outside Diameter: 343 mm
  • Overall Height: 83 mm
  • Center Hole Diameter: 106 mm
  • Mounting Holes: 6
  • Bolt Circle: 139.6 mm
  • Approximate Weight: 24.25 lb

The Heavy-Duty drum adds approximately 2.7 lb of material per side. The additional mass increases thermal capacity, making it better suited to applications that regularly generate more brake heat.

Advantages

  • Greater thermal mass
  • Better suited to repeated or prolonged braking
  • Good choice for vehicles regularly carrying additional weight
  • Useful for mountain, towing, work, or demanding off-road use

Considerations

  • Adds approximately 2.7 lb of unsprung and rotating mass per rear wheel
  • Provides limited practical benefit for many normally driven vehicles
  • Does not inherently increase braking force or shorten stopping distance

For most street-driven 4Runners, choose the Standard drum. Choose Heavy Duty when the vehicle regularly experiences sustained braking, heavier loads, mountain driving, towing within the vehicle's rated capacity, or other conditions that generate additional brake heat.

Interchangeability

The Standard and Heavy-Duty drums fit the same applicable rear brake configuration.

When replacing both rear drums:

  • Choose either Standard or Heavy Duty
  • You do not need to determine which version was previously installed
  • Install the same drum type on both sides of the rear axle

When replacing only one rear drum:

  • Match the drum type currently installed on the opposite side
  • Do not mix a Standard drum and Heavy-Duty drum on the same rear axle

Using matching drums on both sides helps maintain consistent rear braking characteristics.
