CUSCO Type RS 1.5-Way / 2-Way Limited Slip Differential

For May 1983–October 1985 Toyota Corolla Levin / Sprinter Trueno AE86 Zenki with 4A-GE & Manual Transmission

Overview

The CUSCO Type RS Limited Slip Differential is a performance-focused rear differential upgrade for the Zenki Toyota AE86 Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno. Designed for the 4A-GE manual-transmission rear-wheel-drive platform, it provides more effective power transfer between the rear wheels during acceleration and performance driving.

CUSCO's Type RS design uses internal RS coil springs to generate low initial torque, allowing the clutch plates to engage quickly and progressively while reducing unnecessary drivetrain resistance and chatter. The design delivers responsive differential action while maintaining smooth, consistent operation.

This listing is available in 1.5-way and 2-way configurations, allowing the setup to be selected around the vehicle's intended driving style.

Key Features

  • CUSCO Type RS clutch-type limited slip differential
  • Rear differential application for Zenki AE86
  • Choice of 1.5-way or 2-way configuration
  • Low-initial-torque RS coil spring design
  • 5–7 kgf·m standard initial torque
  • 12 RS springs
  • Responsive clutch engagement with reduced drivetrain resistance
  • Helps transfer power more effectively through both rear wheels
  • Designed for performance street, touge, grip, circuit, and drift applications
  • Vehicle-specific fitment for 4A-GE manual-transmission AE86 models

Type RS Performance

CUSCO's Type RS system uses precision coil springs to maintain initial pressure on the internal clutch packs. Compared with traditional higher-initial-torque designs, this allows the differential to remain responsive while placing less constant pressure on the clutch plates.

The result is smooth initial engagement, reduced chatter, lower drivetrain resistance, and consistent differential response to throttle input. The Type RS design is well suited to the lightweight, rear-wheel-drive AE86 platform where predictable power delivery and throttle response are especially important.

Vehicle Fitment

1.5-Way vs. 2-Way

1.5-Way

The 1.5-way configuration provides strong differential locking during acceleration with reduced locking action during deceleration. This gives the AE86 a responsive, controlled feel during corner entry while maintaining strong traction when getting back on the throttle.

A great choice for street performance, touge, autocross, grip driving, and circuit use where smooth transitions and versatile handling are priorities.

2-Way

The 2-way configuration provides differential locking during both acceleration and deceleration. This creates more consistent rear-axle behavior through throttle-on and throttle-off transitions and is especially useful when the driver wants deliberate control of the rear of the car.

A strong choice for drifting, aggressive circuit driving, and performance-focused AE86 builds where predictable rear-wheel locking behavior is desired.

Quick Choice: Choose 1.5-way for a versatile street and grip-oriented setup. Choose 2-way for more consistent acceleration/deceleration locking and a drift-focused driving style.

Available Configurations

1.5-Way Type RS

  • Supplied in 1.5-way configuration
  • 55° acceleration / 20° deceleration cam setting
  • Strong acceleration-side locking with reduced deceleration-side action

2-Way Type RS

  • Supplied in 2-way configuration
  • 55° acceleration / 55° deceleration cam setting
  • Consistent locking action under acceleration and deceleration

Both configurations use CUSCO's 1.5 & 2-way cam design, allowing the operating configuration to be changed during differential overhaul.
