Overview
The Cometic Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) Cylinder Head Gasket is a performance-oriented sealing upgrade for Toyota 22R, 22RE, and 22R-TE engines. Its MLS construction is well suited to stock rebuilds, high-compression combinations, turbocharged applications, and other engines where consistent cylinder-head sealing is critical.
This 0.040-inch compressed-thickness gasket uses three stainless-steel layers with embossed, Viton-coated outer layers. The design provides an active combustion seal while accommodating the thermal expansion and cylinder pressure encountered in demanding engine applications.
Available in 93mm and 95mm bore sizes, the correct gasket should be selected according to the engine's finished cylinder bore rather than vehicle year alone.

Installation Requirements
MLS head gaskets require properly prepared sealing surfaces to perform correctly.
- Cylinder head and block deck should have a surface finish of 50 Ra or finer
- Both sealing surfaces must be flat, clean, and dry
- Do not apply copper spray or additional gasket sealer
- Verify finished cylinder bore before selecting gasket size
- Follow the correct cylinder-head tightening sequence
- Follow the torque specifications supplied by the head-bolt or head-stud manufacturer
- Professional machining and engine assembly are recommended when surface condition is unknown
